ARROGANCE OF DESTINY

EPISODE 4
OBA CHAMBERS OF THE PALACE, BINI KINGDOM
YEAR 1512

Oba Ozolua sat in a stool near a crude hurricane lamp. The lamp’s yellow flame danced about as the night breeze came in and went out; never allowing the shadows no rest.

He had disciplined his children before but this one is a little difficult. Recently he had notice, he stopped seeing him. Those days, he will play to the throne-room part of the palace. He was so full of life; he pursued and caught a lot of goats and lizards.

So small and dirty. We grow out of joy.

But he had grown so fast and so mighty; the last time the king saw him, he was looking at his chest while struggling to see his face. He suppose that’s why he had not been seeing him around, it must be awkward for him too. They say okra is never taller than its owner.

He just hoped he is not ashamed of his size.

But he is my son. Lions don’t give birth to sheep. Idubor must be one of the Obas or Ogisos that felt powerless but wished that in his next life, he would gigantic.

People had reported that they have seen him hunting; it is not normal hunting at all. It is one animal pursuing to tear to pieces another animal. That’s to show that he has the spirit of a warrior like him and his father, the king thought.

“kada father, good evening. May you live long. You sent for me, father.”

“Come in.”

A big leg crossed the threshold and a mountain struggle into the hut. He had to bow so low inside. His father gestured him to sit down with on the bed.

So big but not clumsy. Good quality for battle. “Idubor, I heard you have been creating problems.” Idubor tried to hide his face; he still had the primordial fear of fathers in males. His father’s status even made it worst.

“Papa, may you live long--”

“Get to the point; I get those enough from my cabinet. At the end, nobody would from this world fly to the spirit world, without dying.”

“If you say so my father. Nosakhare and Osaro are always calling me chimpanzee and yesterday, they stole my goat and hid it at Queen-Imade’s-street part of the harem. When I saw it with them, they denied it was mine and said I am big with goat shit for brain. It should be noted that I broke their hands while collecting my goat from them; not on suppose oo…”

“You and Nosakhare and Osaro, who is oldest? As the eldest were you not suppose to do the thing of the adult. My son you are strong and big, you are meant for great things. You should be above the pettiness of the little ones. If I have listened to the grumbles of all the kingdoms I have conquered, none would have remained.”

“But Papa, I had to take what belongs to me, by force if need be. The way you do with those kingdoms.”

“My son conquering people are not the will of Osanobua… mere mortals are the ones that act base on their fears and pride. It is my duty to make the kingdom great but that like every extraordinary feat  needs sacrifices. As a king my people first before my self. One day you will understand.

“Alright, tomorrow, go to Ezomo, the head of the army; since you want something to do with all the extra strength. And, Idubor. I. Don’t. Want. To. Hear. Complains. Again. Is that clear?”

“Yes, my lord.”
